WHO IS SHE??
Well hello, presumed friends-not-foes of myself and mother earth. My name is Kate, and I've recently become mildly obsessed with the practice of living clean.
When I say "clean," in no way, shape or form do I mean mess- free. In fact, if you ask any one of my close friends or family, they would probably say that's my biggest fault. Somehow, my shoes just fall off my feet in the middle of the entryway and my clothes on the bathroom floor for hours after I shower. I'm working on it, okay?!
No, when I say "clean" I mean more so in the products that I use- the intention behind my purchases, and actively trying to reuse items in my home to make the imprint I leave behind on this planet a little smaller.
Man oh man- it's a process. But why the sudden urge to "make the world a better place"? Because one can't simply change their lifestyle away from chemical-based personal items and cleaners without falling down the rabbit hole of what happens to all of these single-use products once we're done with them. And why did I enter this world, you ask?
My mother passed away in November of 2019 which was a really hard pill to swallow. She was parent 2/2 to die from cancer. My father died when I was 20 years old in November of 2012 and to be honest, I don't think it had as large of an impact on my awareness as my mom's death did. My parents were each other's best friends and biggest supporters- but they were also lifelong smokers, lovers of conventional "clean laundry" smells, big name soap companies, hair products, colognes and perfumes, deodorants, etc.
We never put much thought into WHAT exactly went into those products to make them smell good or
"clean" well. I put the word clean in quotes because dousing your body in chemicals isn't exactly cleaning, is it? It's more so just taking the natural odors of our bodies and messes and killing them with harsh chemicals that have awful ramifications for our bodies.
The word "fragrance" is in virtually everything we use- did you know there is not a single regulation for this word, as companies claim it is a "trade secret?" So while the ingredients may be listed on the bottle, if it says fragrance you could be slathering rat poison all over your largest organ (hey biology class- the largest organ is your skin!) Pretty scary stuff. Realizing this sent me down the hole of investigating everything I was using on my body and putting into it- and I freaked out. Like, really freaked out.
I started using up what I had and made a pact with myself that whatever I could safely make myself with essential oils and ACTUAL natural ingredients, I would. And so far- here are my takeaways. I no longer use hand soap with fragrances- Just Fragrance Free Castille Soap with antiviral Essential oils like Lemon, Tea Tree and Thieves. I use all natural bar soap (hey, no plastic bottles!) hanging from a bamboo soap rope in the shower. I fixed the peeling on my nose that had been 3+ years of epidermal nightmares (YES, I probably should have seen a dermatologist, but after this long using every conventional toxic petroleum-based anything and everything, I actually fixed my problem NATURALLY!), make my own bug sprays, after sun sprays, toners, moisturizers, dish soap, dry shampoo and have gotten away from candles completely. In fact, candles now give me a headache as my senses have detoxed of all of those harsh fragrances out of my rotation.
The average woman puts 100 chemicals on her body before she leaves for work in the morning. That to me is just not fair considering the same average woman doesn't have the time to do a deep dive on what exists in her beauty routine no less complete all the steps before she leaves the house.
Learn with me, connect with me, be BETTER with me- we're all on this crazy spinning rock through space living in a blip in time- lets make the world a better place because we exist, shall we?
